I can't lie to you all, the cover really got me.
I've heard such good things about Patricia Lockwood and while I enjoyed every crumb of her writing, this felt very disjointed to me. There were lines I loved smattered throughout, but I couldn't recount anything from the book itself in terms of plot, and I want to be able to talk about it more, but I've lost so much of it since reading it last month.
The title comes from the magazine cover when they cloned Dolly the sheep.
This reads more like a stream of consciousness through the brain fog left behind from the pandemic, which could make this book brilliant because if she is left behind in the dust from Covid, then we as readers could be, too. I didn't make that distinction while reading so this fell flat for me.
"The result is cortical shrapnel – you can almost hear this book rattle when you open it," wrote Beejay Silcox, and I agree wholeheartedly.
I would consider revisiting now that I understand the brain fog is purposeful, but I can't make any promises because I also really wanted this one to be over.
